I first met Devon Austin and her husband, Lavanson, at a mutual friend’s birthday celebration at La Terraza Guest House B&B in Grecia, Costa Rica, in January 2020. Devon and her husband are expats from the Bay Area of Northern California and have lived in Costa Rica for six years. She first resided in Grecia and now in Escazu the (Beverly Hills) of Costa Rica. Devon is the administrator and creator of Black Expats in Costa Rica, a viral Facebook Group created in 2017. The group has grown extremely fast and now has over 2000 members.
In June 2021, Devon and I decided to create an internet radio station and came up with Blaxit Radio’s name to focus on the Blaxit community worldwide. Blaxit is a social movement that promotes the expatriation of Black/African – African Americans from the U.S. to destinations abroad. The term Blaxit was coined in the wake of Brexit by academic, journalist, and human rights consultant Dr. Ulysses Burley III. The term combines Black and Exit to form Blaxit in the same manner that Brexit describes the British Exit from the European Union.
So, it was a fitting name. It’s estimated that thousands of people worldwide represent the Blaxit community.
Devon is General Manager, and her responsibilities vary from recruiting new DJ/Hosts for the station and having her broadcasts Monday through Saturday. Devon’s main broadcast is Jazz and Java, airing Monday – Friday from 12 noon until 4 pm. The smooth jazz music she plays is reminiscent of some of the most famous jazz stations in the Bay Area and Southern California that I am very familiar with. The other two shows consist of This Is It, a talk show featuring fascinating guests, from well-known musicians to black expats worldwide. This Is It airs every Saturday from 12 noon until 1 pm. Immediately following is Jazz & Java Around the World, from 1 pm until 4 pm, which showcases an eclectic playlist of music you won’t hear anywhere else.
Besides creating and producing her shows, Devon wears many hats at Blaxit Radio. She also expands our reach through various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
